• Why is it called "Snapshot365?
Because the aim is to take a snapshot of a bunch of webcams, 365 days a year. That, and the fact that it's a fairly catchy name and the domain was available.
  • Where do you get the webcam images from?
From webcams! To begin with, the site was seeded with a few specially selected webcams, just so that there would be some images on the site when it was launched. But all webcams added since the launch have been suggested by viewers.
  • Why don't you have more webcams archived?
Because the site is new, and we haven't yet had many user submissions.
  • Can I add my webcam to the site?
Sure. Just so long as it meets the basic requirements, which are:
    1. The camera is static (i.e., it points in the same direction all the time)
    2. The image size is a minimum of 320 x 240 pixels (but bigger is better)
    3. The camera points at something which shows a visible change from day to day (so an outdoor scene, such as a park, a street or the countryside, is good but the inside of an office or studio probably isn't).
    4. The camera is expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future (we don't want to have to keep taking short-term cameras out of the list). The one exception to this is that we might archive cameras pointing at important special events, such as the Olympics or the Football World Cup, provided they meet the other requirements.
If you think you've got a webcam which meets these requirements, then go to the webcam submission page and let us know about it.
  • Why are some of the images missing?
Because webcams have a habit of being unreliable! We have a one-hour time window in which to grab the image (we try to stick to aproximately the same time each day in order to make the images comparable sequentially). If we fail to get it the first time, we'll keep on trying until the hour is up. If we can't get an image for that day, then the calendar for that webcam will show a "missing image" icon instead of a thumbnail.
  • Why are some of the images black or just noise?
Because webcams have a habit of being unreliable! If the camera itself is turned off, or has a fault, but the website is still serving images, then the Snapshot365 webcam grabber will still grab the image but it will be rather useless. (A similar problem arises if the webcam is stuck: we might grab an image that's several hours or even days old.) There isn't really anything we can do about that.
  • Is this all there is to the site, or is there more to come?
That's a very good question! Future enhancements may, or may not, include things such as per-country lists of webcams, user-contributed comments, a gallery of the best pictures, and maybe some kind of search facility. All of this really depends on the supply of circular tuits.
